Remove Wind Noise in Premiere Pro
This tip fixes a clip recorded on an iPad with a fan blowing nearby, which left a constant wind rumble under the natural sounds of objects being set down. The aim is to remove the wind but keep those sounds. The same fix works for outdoor vlog footage recorded in wind.
Steps
- In the Effects panel search for DeNoise and drag it onto the audio clip.
- In Effect Controls open its settings and choose a heavy noise reduction preset. If the clip has a voiceover, use a lighter setting so the voice is not affected.
- The hiss drops but the low wind rumble may sound worse. Search for Highpass (under Filter and EQ) and apply it to the clip.
- The default cutoff removes too much. Lower it to around 350 Hz so the wind disappears but the environment sounds stay.
- Toggle the effects on and off to compare.
For voiceover noise rather than wind, see the Essential Sound method in “Remove Background Noise in Premiere Pro with One Click” on this site.
