Remove Background Noise from a Voiceover in Premiere Pro

This tip fixes two common voiceover problems in Adobe Premiere Pro at the same time: background hiss and uneven volume. Both are handled in the Essential Sound panel without any plugins.

Steps

  1. Select the audio clip in the timeline and open Window > Essential Sound.
  2. Assign the clip type Dialogue.
  3. Under Presets choose Balanced Male Voice or Balanced Female Voice. This applies loudness matching so quiet and loud sections end up at the same level. If you only want noise removal, choose Clean Up Noisy Dialogue instead.
  4. Open the Repair section and tick Reduce Noise. Raise the amount until the hiss disappears; the video settles on about 5 out of 10.
  5. If the result sounds quieter, raise the clip volume slightly (around 1.2 dB in the video).

Notes

Listen while adjusting Reduce Noise, since very high values start to thin the voice. The related tip on removing wind noise covers the DeNoise and high-pass approach for outdoor recordings.
