Colourful Triangle Background with Repeat Grid
This tip makes a bright geometric background in Adobe Illustrator in a few minutes: one hexagon is cut into six triangles, coloured, and tiled across the artboard with Repeat Grid.
Steps
- Select the Polygon Tool, click the artboard and set radius 500, 6 sides.
- Turn on Smart Guides and Snap to Point. With the Pen Tool draw three straight lines connecting opposite corners of the hexagon.
- Select everything (no fill), Pathfinder > Divide, then Ungroup. You now have six triangles.
- Give each triangle a colour from your swatches.
- Select the group and go to Object > Repeat > Grid. In Properties set the grid type to Brick by Column, vertical gap 0 and horizontal gap minus 250 (half the hexagon width) so the shapes interlock.
- Scale the grid over your artboard, then Object > Expand with only Object ticked to turn it back into ordinary shapes.
- Recolour individual triangles, or apply gradients, until the pattern looks right.
