A Simple Flat Landscape in Vector
This short video shows a simple landscape being drawn in Adobe Illustrator, mostly with the Pen Tool and basic shapes. It is a good example of how far you can get with flat colours and a few gradients when the shapes are clean.
The artwork
Layers of rolling green hills sit in front of a large orange sun on a pale sky with soft clouds. Small round trees in two or three shades of green are dotted along the hills, and a winding path leads into the scene. The foreground is darker than the background, which gives a clear sense of depth even though everything is flat.
What to look for
Watch how the scene is built back to front: sky and sun first, then the far hills, then the nearer ones, with the trees added last. The colour steps between hill layers are what make the depth work. If you are new to Illustrator this is an easy composition to copy and then change with your own colours.
