Recreating the Illustrator 2022 Loading Screen

This speed art video is a personal challenge: recreate the artwork from the Adobe Illustrator 2022 splash screen using only the Pen Tool. The original illustration was created by Petra Eriksson for Adobe; this video is a study of it, not an original design.

The artwork

Two puffins perch on dark blue rocks, drawn in bold flat shapes with black bodies, white faces and bright orange and yellow beaks. Behind them, concentric bands of orange, yellow and pink radiate like a sunset, with deep blue shapes at the edges. The style is graphic and poster-like, with no gradients and strong colour blocking.

Why only the Pen Tool

Limiting yourself to one tool forces clean path work. Every curve of the birds and every band of the background is a hand-placed path. If you are practising the Pen Tool, studies like this one are a good exercise: pick a flat illustration you admire and rebuild it shape by shape.

This is a speed art video, not a step-by-step tutorial. It is meant to show the process and give you ideas. For guided lessons, see the step-by-step tutorials linked below.
