Design with Basic Geometric Shapes
This speed art video shows a colourful pattern artwork being assembled in Adobe Illustrator from nothing but basic geometric shapes: squares, quarter circles, triangles and circles. It is a good reminder that you do not need complex drawing skills to make a strong graphic piece.
The artwork
The finished design is a dense grid of tiles. Each tile holds a simple motif, such as a half circle, a diagonal split, a ring or a diamond, in a limited palette of navy, coral red, mustard yellow, cream and pale blue. Because every tile uses the same small set of shapes and colours, the whole grid reads as one pattern even though no two tiles are identical.
Where you can use it
This style suits backgrounds, wall art, poster designs and packaging. It also works well as a repeating pattern swatch. Try building your own version by fixing your palette first and then filling a grid one tile at a time.
This is a speed art video, not a step-by-step tutorial. It is meant to show the process and give you ideas. For guided lessons, see the step-by-step tutorials linked below.
