Speed Painting A African Tribal Woman in Adobe Photoshop

Speed Painting an African Tribal Woman

This speed painting in Adobe Photoshop depicts an African tribal woman, inspired by an “Egyptian witch doctor” look. It was painted with basic brushes and a deliberately limited, almost monotone palette, and is shown as a process video.

The artwork

A portrait with a tall feathered headdress, horned skull ornaments and white and yellow face paint, in a restrained palette of ochre and dark blue. Keeping the colours few and close in tone gives the piece a striking, almost graphic mood while the painting stays detailed.

What to look for

Watch how much drama comes from limiting the palette: the light and shadow do the work, and the few bright marks of face paint and the headdress carry the eye. It is a good study in restraint.

This is a speed art video, not a step-by-step tutorial. It shows the process to inspire and give ideas. For guided lessons, see the step-by-step tutorials linked below.
